Garden berries: Black currant, Strawberry and Raspberry

 




Blackcurrant, strawberry and raspberry are sweet and delicious berries full of polyphenols, vitamins, fibers and essential minerals. Blackcurrant is very rich in vitamin C and it also contains vitamins A, E and folate. Dark colour gives a hint of high amount of anthocyanins. The most typical polyphenol in strawberries and raspberries are ellagitannins.

According to clinical studies, black currants and strawberries might prevent chronic diseases like cardiovascular diseases and type II diabetes. Red raspberries seem to be also promising, but the studies are mainly experimental. There might be also positive antimicrobial effects on pathogenic bacteria, but these experimental findings have to be confirmed.
